A FANS OBSERVATION

A great weekend of footy just passed and I think you can really start to tell, which teams will be a force in the semi finals and which teams won’t.
In last week’s article, I mentioned that the Sea Eagles just seem to be a side that may struggle under pressure against the big teams. The Rabbitohs proved my statement, by grinding out a tough 24-18 point victory in a game that the Sea Eagles should have won. The Sea Eagles were dealt a massive blow with their skipper having to miss the game due to injury, but I still think that the Sea Eagles needed to show the rest of the Semi Final teams, that they are not a one man band. Unfortunately I don’t think that they achieved that.
The Melbourne Storm won their game against the struggling Eels in the big wet. I was at this game, and I can tell you, Melbourne may not be belting out big scores at the moment, but after watching this game in pretty ordinary conditions, I am convinced that maybe Melbourne will be one team not to take too likely. Over the last couple of weeks, they have scraped home with wins, but they have been against teams close to making the top 8 or teams already in the top 8.
The Bulldogs also grinded out a tough win against an impressive Broncos outfit. The Broncos don’t have many stars left in their side, but over the last 2 games, they have nearly beaten the Strom and now the Bulldogs. Last week, I also mentioned the importance of Brent Sherwin to the Bulldogs, and after watching him steel the game from the Broncos with a big field goal, I am convinced that he would have to be the best number 7 in the top 8 presently. I can’t wait for next week’s game between the Storm and Bulldogs, as we may be watching a preview of the Grand Final.
I was also impressed with the Cowboys again. This time it was Jason Smiths time to shine. Jason adds another option for the Cowboys that will throw the opposition into two minds, and he showed that against the Dragons. I expect the Cowboys will go close to making another Grand Final appearance, but I also believe that they will end up probably one game short of the Grand Final.
The Tigers were impressive again when the pressure was put on them, but if they give that kind of start to a team in the Semi’s, I don’t know if they will be good enough to come back. The Rabbitohs will test them next week but unfortunately for the Rabbitohs, it is at the Tigers best home ground.
I was reading an article in one of the Sunday’s papers about Kirk Reynoldson from the Knights. I really feel sorry for this guy. Reynoldson is a player who has never been in any off field dramas and has always put his heart and soul into playing for his club. In his last run for the Knights he made 32 tackles in 20 minutes which shows a great commitment. It now appears he is getting the punt because the club wants to save a few bucks. If the Club believed him to be such a good player why did they put a clause in the contract for a bonus deal if he plays 15 or more games. Surely the club should honour his bonus before an embarrassing court case erupts, which will make our game a laughing stock.
Speaking of laughing stocks, some of these Panther players just don’t learn. Once again us fans are subjected to reading articles alleging players hitting the booze and playing up. This whole episode should act as a warning to players transferring to Brisbane as the club has sacked players in the past for booze related behaviour. I don’t know if only giving three of the players a fine, was the right answer either, as all of them wouldn't be short of a dollar. The media's reporting of the alleged behaviour certainly took the glossour teams great win against the Knights.

PDJRL A Grade D1 - Results According to Expectations
Last Sunday's results went according to expectation with Brothers having too much firepower for an Emu Plains team and Blacktown City just scraping home against Doonside.
The second round of the play-offs take place on Sunday with minor premiers St Marys taking on Brothers for a place in the grand final, while Emu Plains and Blacktown City do battle for the right to remain in the play-offs.
Little should separate Emu Plains and Blacktown City in their match with the winner likely to be the team with the greatest will to win. The St Marys versus Brothers match is an interesting one. The only match between these two giants of the competition was back in round in which St Marys took many by surprise by winning convincingly. Since the match both teams have taken all before them and are undefeated.

Hornsby Hosting International

The Hornsby Basketball Association is hosting an international game at the Dartford Road Indoor Sports Centre, Thornleigh at 7pm this Thursday, with the Sydney Uni Flames WNBL team taking on the visiting University of Wisconsin women's team.
The Flames are using this game as one of their pre-season hit-outs, prior to the commencement of the 2007-2008 WNBL season.
Hornsby fans will get to see three of their star players from the Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) competition at the forefront for the Flames, including Michelle Musselwhite, Alicia Poto and Georgia Woodyard.
It will be a triumphant return for Woodyard, who starred with the Australian Women's University team last week, in their gold medal success at the World University Games.
Woodyard however was sorely missed by the Spiders fans on Saturday night, when the local team was crushed 95-62 by the Townsville Flames, in a quarter final of the Australian Basketball Association (ABA) championships.
The Flames, as premiers of this year's Queensland Australian Basketball League (QABL) competition, were expected to be of equal strength with the Spiders, the premiers of the WABL competition.
Townsville Heat WNBL star Rohanee Cox destroyed that notion on Saturday night, staging a powerhouse performance to lead the Queensland team to a 33-point victory and a berth in the ABA semi finals, which will be played in Melbourne this weekend.
Musselwhite stood tall for the Spiders, putting in yet another outstanding performance and leading her team with 35 points and 15 boards.
Townsville Flames 95 (Rohanee Cox 30 points, 14 boards; Melissa Hill 18 points, Rachel Flanagan 15) def Hornsby Spiders 62 (Michelle Musselwhite 35 points, 15 boards; Alicia Poto 14 points)
Next Game: Thursday Aug 23 7pm Sydney Uni Flames versus University of Wisconsin.
