Committed Panthers fall to Dragons

Matt Trodden

The Penrith Panthers have lost 32-12 to the St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Stadium this evening.

The Panthers played some enterprising football, but were unable to break down the Dragons defence, while the Dragons were clinical in attack and took the most of their opportunities.

The Panthers had some encouraging news in the lead up to the game, with departing stars Petero Civoniceva and Trent Waterhouse passed fit to play their final game for the club.

The Panthers got off to a bumper start, playing enterprising football and throwing the ball around. They forced two line drop-outs in the opening 10 minutes, both from pinpoint kicks from Luke Walsh. Walsh also made a brilliant cover tackle on Brett Morris as the Dragons speedster ran down the left side.

But it was the Dragons who scored the first points, with Brett Morris scoring on the left corner off a contentious pass by Matt Cooper. Jamie Soward converted from out wide, and after 17 minutes the Dragons held a 6-0 lead.

The Panthers then showed some great commitment in defence, with Brad Tighe and Lachlan Coote making another brilliant cover tackle on Matt Cooper, and just five minutes later, Nigel Plum holding Ben Creagh up over the line.

Unfortunately the Dragons scored from the ensuing set, with Adam Cuthbertson getting an offload to Darius Boyd, who floated across to the left side and threw a cut out to Brett Morris. Morris scored in the corner, and Soward duly converted, leaving the score at 12-0 after 29 minutes.

The news didnÕt get much better for the Panthers in the 32nd minute, with captain Petero Civoniceva leaving the field with a pectoral injury.

The score remained 12-0 until half time, with the Panthers dominating the early periods, but unable to take advantage and put points on the board against the concerted Dragons defence.

The Panthers came out from the half time break eager to get back into the game, and they did so in the 52nd minute. A pinpoint high kick from Lachlan Coote was batted back inside by David Simmons, into the hands of Blake Austin, who scored off his first touch, just five seconds after entering the field of play. Luke Walsh added the extras, and the Panthers had brought the score back to 12-6.

A mistake in the set following the kick-off gave the Dragons good field position, and they struck straight back through Jamie Soward, who ran off a Beau Scott offload. Soward then converted from in front, and after 57 minutes, they held an 18-6 lead.

The Dragons continued their clinical attack in the 59th minute, with Jamie Soward hitting Jason Nightingale on the chest with a cut out ball, the winger tip-toeing down the touch line to score in the corner. Soward missed the conversion to leave the Dragons up 22-6.

The Panthers then took advantage of a Dragons mistake deep within their half, scoring a wonderful try. Luke Walsh hit Sam McKendry with a short ball, who offloaded to Blake Austin, who then offloaded to Lachlan Coote, who stretched out to score.

The sublime play was a testament to the style the Panthers adopted during the game, and just reward for their efforts. Walsh converted again, and it was game on at 22-12 with 15 minutes remaining.

It was the Dragons who struck the next blow though, Matt Cooper out-jumping Lachlan Coote to a Soward bomb down the short side to score. Soward again missed from out wide, and the Dragons led 26-12 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Dragons then put the game beyond doubt in the 76th minute, with Mitch Rein scoring off a Darius Boyd offload, despite appearing to fumble the ball in the lead up. Soward converted, and the game finished at 32-12.

They Just Kept Trying

Matt Trodden

Penrith coach Steve Georgallis has praised the efforts of his players despite going down 32-12 to the defending premiers St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium.

The Panthers got themselves back into the game at 22-12 after trailing 12-0 at half time, but the Dragons efficient and sharp attack proved too much for Penrith in the end.

Georgallis, who himself is departing the club after an eleven week stint as head coach, believed that his side turned up to play, but the Dragons were just too good.

ÒThey (the Panthers) just didnÕt stop trying,Ó Georgallis said.

ÒSt George were a different St George to the side IÕve seen in the last three weeks on the video tape.

ÒI thought they were really sharp tonight, they were just really, really good.

"Our defence on the edges has been pretty good in the last few weeks.

ÒI just thought they were sharp, they were passing and they were crisp, they were running and they were full of energy.

ÒObviously they were up for the game today because we were.Ó

Taking on an assistant coaching role at the Tigers next season, Georgallis believes his time at the Panthers in the top job this year has been a great learning curve for him, and thanked his players for all the efforts that they put in for him.

ÒItÕs been a learning curve for me obviously in the last eleven weeks,Ó he said.

ÒIÕm just really happy with the way the players have approached what IÕm trying to do with them.

ÒEvery week they go in and try their hardest and thatÕs all you can ask for as a coach.

ÒPlayers that are committed, trying their heart out and giving a team effort, itÕs just great to have players like that.Ó

And while it hasnÕt sunken in yet that he wonÕt be a head coach from now on, Georgallis said it was great experience for his future.

Ò(It will probably sink in) in the next few weeks, but I think its called coaching course 101,Ó he said.

ÒOne week youÕve got a job, then the next week you havenÕt, then something happens the following weeks, then you have a few losses in a row and you get yourself up for a win.

ÒItÕs been great for me, the amount of stuff IÕve learnt in the last eleven weeks.

ÒHow you deal with players and all that sort of stuff has been great, hopefully in the next few years I get another chance at it.Ó

Waterhouse Disappointed Not To Go Out On A High

Matt Trodden

Departing Panthers second-rower Trent Waterhouse has expressed his disappointment at not being able to win his final game for the club following PenrithÕs 32-12 loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Panthers dominated in the early stages, and played some enterprising football, but were unable to capitalise, and the Dragons made them pay in a clinical display.

Waterhouse, who is leaving to play for Warrington in the English Super League, said he was hoping for a win, but ultimately they were outplayed.

ÒIt was disappointing, not finishing up with a win,Ó Waterhouse said.

ÒIÕve been here at the club for a long time now, and it would have been nice to go out with a win.

ÒBut theyÕre a top side, theyÕre the premiers, and once they get a lead theyÕre hard to peg back.

ÒWe kept trying and trying like we have all year, but just little things.

ÒErrors and penalties at crucial times, you canÕt do it.Ó

Waterhouse was originally not named in the Panthers squad after aggrivaiting a medial ligament tear in his knee, but passed a fitness test the day before the game and got through the game without any worries.

ÒItÕs alright (his knee), its just a medial tear,Ó he said.

ÒIÕve had it for a while now, and I just aggravated it a bit last week.

ÒIt came good during the week, (during the) last training session it felt alright, so I decided to play and it was alright.Ó

The injury news wasnÕt as good for departing captain Petero Civoniceva, who has torn his pectoral muscle. Coach Steve Georgallis said while he was unaware of the full extent, he was hoping for PeteroÕs sake that it wasnÕt too bad.

ÒIÕm not sure how long they take, or the extent of the injury,Ó Georgallis said.

ÒBut obviously heÕs not getting any younger.

ÒSometimes those sort of injuries can take longer to heal the older you are, but IÕm hopeful that itÕs not that bad.Ó

Be sure to return to penrithpanthers.com.au over the weekend to get all the latest from the game, including the comments from coach Steve Georgallis, an injury update and photo gallery.

Basketball with Noel Rowsell

The Penrith State League Men's team has won it's fourth premiership in the past five years, following a successful campaign in Newcastle at the 2011 Waratah Basketball Finals Weekend.

The Panthers had missed the semi-finals in 2010, with a combination of injuries and absentees upsetting the program and seeing the Panthers lose their Qualifying game to the Queanbeyan Yowies and the elimination quarter final to the Illawarra Hawks.

There was little consolation that these two teams would ultimately fight out the 2010 grand final and Panthers head coach Jeff Cooper set about restoring the Panthers fortunes in 2011, describing this year's campaign as "a rebuilding program".

That development has been hugely successful, with the Panthers winning the minor premiership in Pool D, crushing the Lithgow Lazers in their qualifying final, then easily accounting for the Bankstown Bruins 89-65 in their semi-final.

These results put the Panthers into the most anticipated grand final match-up in recent years, with their opponent the Hornsby Spiders an equally dominant force in Pool C and remaining undefeated throughout the season to justifiably share favouritism with the Panthers for the grand final.

Both teams enjoyed time in the lead during the grand final but the Panthers were giving their opponents some assistance, shooting well below their season average from the free throw line.

2011 Rookie of the Year Emlyn Dodd was simply outstanding in the first half and led the Panthers superbly, knocking down shots from every position around the key as he celebrated his new celebrity status.

The Spiders however would not go away and led during the final quarter, before the Panthers finally settled their nerves on the free throw line to edge ahead and eventually claim a gripping victory.

Coach Cooper said "As I've said all year, this was yet another team effort".

"We (Penrith) didn't feature anyone in the All-Star Five this year but that simply backs up my belief this has been a great team and every player has contributed throughout the year".

Saturday: Semi-Final: Penrith Panthers 89 (Tony Lalic 18 points, 8 boards; Josh Morehead 16 points, Steve Gavrilovic 16, Bruce Wells 14 points, 12 boards; Louis Brandt 10 points, 8 boards) def Bankstown Bruins 65

Sunday: GRAND FINAL: Penrith Panthers 78 (Emlyn Dodd 18 points, Louis Brandt 11, Josh Morehead 10)def Hornsby Spiders 72

St Marys RLFC Report

Well, how good is it to be a St MaryÕs player or supporter? Our season just keeps on getting better. Last Saturday we had another 7 teams playing in the Mod Grand Finals at the Kingsway and Peppertree Reserve. The 9/2s started our winning ways with a very hard fought 6-0 win against Glenmore Park. The 9/1s were beaten by Minchinbury in another close game 12-6.

Our only under 10s team to play in the Grand Final was the Macculloch Drainage 10/4s who defeated Minchinbury 26-12, well done guys.

All four of the under 11s played in a Grand Final but only two ended up Premiers. The 11/3s and 11/2s had good wins against Riverstone and Windsor whilst the 11/4s and 11/1s went down to Windsor and Minchinbury.

So thatÕs 4 out of 7 teams ending the season with a Premiership jacket, weÕre all very proud of all our teams, whether they are Premiers or not, as long as you had fun, made new friends and learnt how to play Rugby League better.

We had 5 International sides playing Elimination finals vying for a spot in this weekÕs International Grand Finals.

The 13/1s defeated St Clair in great display of Junior footy and the 13/3s defeated Windsor to progress through but unfortunately the season is finished one week short for the year for our 13/2s, 14/3s and 15/2s.

In Sunday football we had the 17s and C Grade playing for a spot next week and they both won. The 17s played St Clair, winning 48-4.

The final game for us was C Grade who looked like copping a hammering, trailing 32-6 mid-way into the 2nd half, before one of the best comebacks in a long time to get to 32 all at fulltime. After numerous attempts at a field goal from both sides, Kevin king was able to score a try in the corner.

SALLY (did you see me) Pearson Toast of Australia

World champion hurdler Sally Pearson has won her place among Australia's sporting greats. Her win in Korea on the weekend was a remarkable feat by any measure. It's a new championship record and the fastest time in the women's 100 metre hurdles for nearly 20 years. Her winning margin, by sprinting standards, was enormous. As one commentator put it, she simply blitzed the field.
