A
Fans Observation
by
Brett McVea
The writing was always on the wall for
coach Elliott as the Panthers really had no option left, but to part ways and
go in a different direction. It would seem clear from the weekendÕs
performance, that the boys still donÕt seem to be playing for the coach. After
the events that had taken place throughout the week, you would expect the team
to come out and deliver a win for the embattled coach to make a statement to
the Panthers board that sacked him. Unfortunately we saw much of the same that
we have already seen this season to date.
IÕm wondering if Coach Elliott should
maybe walk now and give someone the opportunity like Steve Georgallis to take
the reigns and show the Panthers Board what he can do for the rest of the comp.
You never know, he may even be able to clear the mindset of some of these out
of form players and turn the Panthers season around.
The performance of the
Panthers attack on Sunday was pretty ordinary. It seemed to be, hit the ball up
4 times then kick for field position. I really didnÕt see too much creativity
by the Halves to try and stump the Warriors defense. The Panthers first two tryÕs were scored with controversy
surrounding them when an obstruction was not looked at and a dubious pass
resulted in their second.
To make 15 errors in one game of footy is
simply not good enough and you canÕt expect to win games if you continue to
make the same ones. Yes the players are just as much to blame for the results
as is the coach, but it is the coaches fault to continue to persist playing
these out of form players week in week out when they donÕt deserve to be there.
There is talk around regarding Tim Grant
possibly becoming an Origin Player this year. GrantÕs form has been pretty
consistent this season and hopefully if he does make the side, then he will no
doubt come back to the Panthers with a massive confidence boost (which is
something that certainly is required for the side). Michael Gordon still seems
to sneak in the meters as he ran another 233m for the game and surely wouldnÕt
let NSW down with the No.2 on his back or even the No.1.

The Broncos juggernaut keeps rolling on as
they took care of a defiant Bulldogs outfit. The game didnÕt go without
controversy, which seems to be the normal lately, but there is no doubt that
the better team won on the day.
The success of the Broncos is demonstrated with the amount of players
named in the Australian team to take on NZ.
The Dragons were also simply too good for
Parramatta as the Dragons pretty much walked all over the Eels. IÕm not sure if
there are many teams in current form, that can beat the Dragons, but IÕd love
to see the Broncos hit up against the Dragons sooner than later.
The Tigers had an impressive win against
the Raiders. I thought the Raiders might want to start putting some Wins next
to their name and the Tigers looked to be ripe for the picking with the injury
list they have. Benji Marshall had different ideas and he also showed the
Australian side what they have to contend with come next Friday. The Raiders
are another team that is in a massive bottomless pit.
The ÒHead Scratch of the week AwardÓ goes
to Jeremy Smith from the Sharks. I didnÕt think I would see the day when us
fans were to witness another digit attack on players privates after John
Hopoate was suspended for doing it while playing for the West Tigers. The
footage of Jeremy Smith was obviously bad to watch, but the fact that it was
against his own Cousin, made it even more concerning.

The ÒPlayer of the WeekÓ went to Jamie
Soward from the Dragons. Jamie was instrumental in the Dragons Win and carved
up the Eels defense with 3 Line Breaks that resulted in Tries. He ran a total
of 161m and had 8 Tackle breaks to go with his 5 goals kicked. If Jamie Soward
is not ready for the NSW jumper now, then IÕm not sure what the Selectors are
waiting for him to do.

Back-to-back NRL Wins
Source
Warriors website
The Vodafone WarriorsÕ fourth win in five
matches has kept them on the edge of the NRLÕs top eight.
Backing
up from their momentous victory over Melbourne on Monday night, the Vodafone
Warriors accounted for Penrith 26-18 at Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday to
improve their record to four wins from eight starts.
The recovery in the
past five weeks, following a run of three losses to open the season, has
included back-to-back wins over Cronulla and the Sydney Roosters in rounds four
and five and now the Storm and the Panthers in rounds seven and eight. The
Vodafone Warriors held eighth spot for a short time after beating Penrith but
finished the round where they started it in ninth place after Wests Tigers
leapt above them again with a 49-12 victory over Canberra.
The Vodafone
WarriorsÕ sequence of successes has provided more polish to an impressive
output by the clubÕs players in the past month or so. While the NRL side has pumped
out four wins in five starts, so have the Vodafone Junior Warriors in the NYC,
who bounced back from an embarrassing 10-40 loss to Melbourne by thumping
Penrith 56-26 on Sunday. And on Saturday the Auckland Vulcans continued to
impose themselves in the New South Wales Cup. With a number of the Vodafone
WarriorsÕ NRL squad lining up for them, the Vulcans overwhelmed the previously
unbeaten Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 50-24, their seventh win in eight starts
to go to the top of the ladder on points differential.
The net effect of
the NRL and NYC efforts is that the Vodafone Warriors are now also among the
leaders in the Club Championship, the competition they won for the first time
last year.
The NRL sideÕs ultimate winning margin was only eight points
after two late tries were conceded, a finish that disappointed coach Ivan
Cleary.
Earlier it had seemed the home side would put together a
commanding victory when Lance HohaiaÕs 70th-minute try opened the margin up to
26-6.
Playing in blustery and tricky conditions, the Vodafone Warriors
found try-scoring success from their kicking game with three of their four
four-pointers coming courtesy of kicks by Brett Seymour (twice) and James
Maloney.
The first came as early as the sixth minute. When PenrithÕs Michael
Gordon and David Simmons made a hash of cleaning up a Maloney kick in their
in-goal, right winger Kevin Locke stole through to win the race to touch down.
Penrith responded with a contentious try to prop Tim Grant, awarded without
being referred to the video referee despite protests Seymour had been impeded
in the lead-up. The two tries provided the only first half scoring action but
the Vodafone Warriors began the second half strongly with two tries in the
first eight minutes.
The half was only two minutes old when Locke lit up
the crowd, racing 85 metres after he seized on a Penrith error close to his own
line. Then six minutes later left winger Krisnan Inu leapt expertly to snaffle
a well-placed Seymour bomb. Maloney converted both tries and the Vodafone
Warriors were well-positioned to go on with leading 18-6, a margin which soon
became 20-6 after a Maloney penalty.
Hohaia, the playersÕ player of the
day, chased down SeymourÕs deft grubber for his try to make the game safe even
though the final margin wasnÕt as convincing as it ought to have
been.
The Vodafone Warriors, despite their ascendancy on the scoreboard,
again faced a heavy defensive workload, making 341 tackles but missing a lot
more (42) than they had in their win in Melbourne. Micheal LuckÕs game-high 40
tackles – despite being rested for much of the last quarter – was
notable for no misses while Aaron Heremaia (35), Elijah Taylor (34) and Russell
Packer (33) all topped 30. Three of the back five – Hohaia, Locke and centre
Lewis Brown – made more than 100 metres while second rower Feleti Mateo
was the busiest with the ball, making 157 metres from 22
runs.
Immediately after the match, the Vodafone Warriors learned five
players had been named in the KiwisÕ squad for Friday nightÕs Anzac Test –
Hohaia, Brown, Simon Mannering, Sam Rapira and Ben Matulino. They all flew out
of Auckland later to link up with the Kiwis on the Gold Coast.
The
Vodafone Warriors travel to Australia on Friday for their ninth-round clash
against the Titans at Skilled Park on Sunday. The five Kiwi internationals will
reunite with their club mates on Saturday. The team will remain in Australia
the following week to prepare for their 10th-round encounter with Newcastle on
May 15.
