Fans Observation

by Brett Mc Vea

The Fans were treated to a pretty decent round of footy over the weekend. We saw it all; a game where the score was only 2-0 with only 15 minutes to play, 4 players sent to the naughty bin within minutes of each other from 1 game, possibly the tackle/hit of the year to date, possibly the try of the year, monsoon like weather and to top it off, a couple of good old fashioned punch ups.

The Panthers gave it a pretty good shot against the Storm for the majority of the game. The Storm is not an easy opponent and to go into the sheds at halftime only 2 points down, is a pretty good defensive effort. Having said that, itÕs also quite clear that the Panthers have some troubles in key areas.  Last season I wasnÕt convinced that Sandor Earl was up to First grade standard and after watching him on Sunday, I stand by that assessment. Yes I take my hat off to him for his 100m try, tho in all fairness, he only had to beat a tired Front Rower chasing him. Aside from that, he has too many errors in his game and his 4 errors cost the Panthers points on Sunday.

Earl isnÕt alone in the error tally either. Michael Jennings hasnÕt exactly set the comp on fire this season like we expected him to. Once again he got caught out running from his defensive line on a scrum creating an overlap for Simmons on the wing and points were scored. Coach Elliott might consider giving Jennings a run in the Reserves this week to try and encourage him to rediscover his previous form.

The Panther forwards gave it their all and Captain ÒPetroÓ lead by example. Trent Waterhouse chipped in with 41 tackles as well. Michael Gordon had another solid performance at fullback and managed to sneak in 308 meters from all of his runs. Walsh had a good plan to stop Billy Slater from returning kicks by aiming for touch. Tahu produced the hit of the year to date, but I think itÕs time for Elliott to put him in the CentreÕs and push Tighe out on the Wing and away we go.

At the end of the day, the experience of the Storm came through when the game counted and they kept a level head. Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith laid the platform for the Storm players like Slater and Duffie to do what they deliver best.

This week we travel to Brookvale to take on another team in great form. The Sea Eagles have a great Halves combination and their Forwards have been pretty consistent this season.

The Broncos have been a surprise packet this season as they have stunned a lot of teams and upset a lot of tippers in the process. The change of coach before the season started hasnÕt seemed to bother them at all. I have really enjoyed watching them play lately. The Dragons also keep rolling on with the wins as they continue to grind down teams and overpower them. They will no doubt be there at the business end to the season.

The ÒHead Scratch Of the Week AwardÓ had some standout contenders. Todd Carney and Anthony Watts raised their hands for it. Rhys Wesser also raised his hand after that terrible decision to kick the ball on the first tackle while only 10m out from the try line (big turning point in the game). I couldnÕt go past Jarryd Hayne. Jarryd received this award last year for his Head butt on Billy Slater where he was criticised heavily for it by his peers. I was nearly fell off the chair when he did it again on Friday night. ItÕs not a good look for his young admirers to see him do this. ItÕs not in the spirit of the game and it was a massive turning point in this game. The Bulldogs went on to score 34 unanswered points after Hayne was put in the sinbin for 10 minutes. Maybe 2 weeks on the sideline is what he needs to rethink his tactics.

ÒPlayer of the WeekÓ went to Ben Barber from the Bulldogs. Barber completely overshadowed his opponent (Jarryd Hayne) by scoring not only one of the TryÕs of the year, but another 2 tryÕs, 2 Line Breaks, 114m gained, 8 Tackle Breaks, 1 Offload and the win.

Panthers Go Down to Storm

Source Panthers website

The Panthers came into the game with a squad unchanged from the previous weeks win over the Raiders in Round 5. Sam McKendry was again elevated to the starting line up with Tim Grant being put back to the bench.

Melbourne opened the scoring in the 10th minute however Penrith were unlucky as they applied pressure early. A Penrith kick had Bill Slater leaping in the air to diffuse it but it was an attempt at the play the ball that saw the fullback drop it just 8 metres shy of his own goal line.

With the feed of the scrum the Panthers couldnÕt capitalise on the opportunity which then saw Melbourne link up for a 60 metre try with Cooper Cronk diving over the line.

During the opening exchanges Nigel Plum came off worse for wear, falling to the ground after a hard hit. He left the field but returned shortly after.

With the game evenly poised during the middle of the first half both teams butchered opportunities. David Simmons tried in vain to keep his try scoring momentum carrying through to each game but was denied through some scrambling defence.

For the Panthers, it was Sandor Earl who scored, and to make it just a little bit more spectacular, he ran over 90 metres to score. A Melbourne kick found Sandor Earl 8 metres out from the try, by the time he landed on the ground, space had opened up and it was a foot race to the try line.

A penalty for offside on the halftime siren allowed the Storm to break the 6-all dead lock with a penalty goal as the teams left the field.

The second half was full of big hits, but it was Melbourne who were pulling the punches on the scoreboard. Tries to Billy Slater (52nd minute) and Matt Duffie (62nd minute) both came off Penrith errors, the last was from a knock on from Sandor Earl. From the scrum Melbourne spread the ball to the right catching the Penrith defence short.

A field goal all but sealed the game, though Storm prop Bryan Norrie extended that further with a try. Timana Tahu added a try for the Panthers as well as his first since coming back to the NRL but stand in fullback Michael Gordon could not add the extras.

In the final wash up the Storm had defeated the Panthers 25-10 in front of a crowd of 11,137 to leave Penrith with 2 wins from their first 6 games with the likes of last years grand finalists the Roosters, as well as the Sharks and Titans.

NRL
MELBOURNE STORM 25 (C Cronk, M Duffie, B Norrie, B Slater tries; C Smith x4 goals, C Cronk field goal) defeated 10 (S Earl, T Tahu tries; M Gordon 1 from 2 goals)

ANZAC DAY 2011

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.

Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.
